"I Used To Write..."

I used to try to write my songs of love,

But that was long ago when love was new--

A tender plant that needed care and praise--

A bubbling stream that endless sang in joy--

All sunny days and only starlit nights--

For love needs all of these, to make it right.

But, now, my love has grown. And, now, at last,

It must be strong and weather storms and floods.

It must be lake-like--deep and calm and still.

It must be light that shines behind dark clouds.

It must have faith to keep me knowing, that

Though darkness, wreck and loneliness prevail,

Love is, and always will be, always mine.

Madge Hall Thomas
